I would agree Shadow except for people who either have no support for the device or their devices are out of warranty, which is the reason i posted the how to as motorola claimed my device was out of warranty.

I believe there is yet another post (on this forum) where someone repaired their earpiece merely by slipping a couple of pieces of "foil" into the contact area claiming the speaker is not defective at all, but the contact area can be insufficient. Which seems borne out by those who were twisting their phones and temporarily getting their speakers to work. Also, one of the pieces you took out (again, yet another post) should be replaced and not reused.

Yes as i did say earlier the contact area is very poor, but i did attempt to fix this before replacing the earpiece but it was a no go and found as some others have that if you blow hard into the actual earpiece ( blowing the metal plate inside the earpiece back into contact with itself inside would cause it to work again for a few seconds ) leading me to believe there may actually be 2 issues with these not one single problem.

Also, one of the pieces you took out (again, yet another post) should be replaced and not reused.

Interested to know what this piece is as i have no issues since repairing the phone.

Cheers

Ahh yea if your talking about the red rubber gasket around the edge of the casing it stays where it is no need to remove it :)

As I recall, it is supposed to be replaced if the "seal" is broken (opened). In other words even if not removed. Which is usual precaution for a rubberized gasket. But, that's probably if you take it for a shower often.

Thanks for the tutorial. If i can get hold of one of those SE earpieces, I will give it a go, rather than send it off to service.

Thanks wizard123

This is a very usefull information.
Motorola told me, that my defy is out of warranty because i changed the room, so this is my only solution.
I manage to open the defy and try to fix the original earpiece with no luck...so i just order the SE earpiece yesterday...thanks to your info i will try to repair it.

I will let you know if it works after :)

As i said before, thanks for your usefull info.

I found this earpiece locally, it looks different from the one in your pictures. It is also more expensive than the model you used but I can't get that one locally (still only cost a couple of quid). I can't tell from the picture, though, whether it has the springy connectors.

This sounds interesting, because if motorola's new phones keep failing, the only solution can be this, but does it work correctly? any problem?

A couple of updates:

  1. I'm tracking my Defy through Motorola's repair facility and it's now in final testing with the fault showing as "Audio-earpiece-no". This in spite of a non-standard ROM being loaded. I'll hopefully get back early next week.
  2. I ordered a couple of K850i earpieces just in case and they arrived today. One appears to have a piece glued to it. Pictures below. If it fails again I'll repair it myself!

The connectors on that look ok should be fine to use from my experience :)

Since i repaired mine myself with the sony ericsson earpiece i can say i have had no issues at all, the quality is crystal clear better than the original imho.

I've fixed mine but i kept the original earpiece cause it should be wiser to use original part instead using parts from other brands. What i did briefly, putting some solder on top of the speaker connections so the contacts would have no problem.

IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM, NO NEED TO SEND THE PHONE TO MOTOROLA IF YOU'RE OUT OF WARRANTY.

ps : check the resistance of the original speaker first to see if it works. If it doesn't, then find a K850 or whatever earpiece :)

Well said, as i stated before i believe there are two issues ( some with contact problems and some with actual faulty earpieces ) although worthy of noting that my earpiece showed up fine on resistance test but still didnt work unless blown into very hard ( seemed as tho the front plate inside the earpiece was loose ) so still needed replacing.

I also kept the original even tho moto says out of warranty

No problem guys, i hope you never have the issues but i know it did hit alot of people including me and motorolla claim mines was out of warranty being only 3 months old ?! but hey i dont have time to argue or mess about as i need my phone.
I will try to get some pictures up but in the meantime follow these steps it is so so simple :

    1. Remove battery & SIM card
    2. Remove the 7 screws from around the phone casing and the 2 silver screws underneath the back cover. ( You will need very small torx bits )
    3. Separate the two halfs of the casing, ( very stiff and fiddly but dont be affraid to use a little force )
    4. Carefully lift off the 2 connectors on the main PCB board and lift it out ( careful not to lose the yellow rubber washers )
    5. Use a small pair of pliers or long nosed pliers to gently grib either side of the earpiece and slowly wiggle side to side untill it comes loose and lifts out ( This takes patience as it is very well glued in but does free off )
    6. Take your new K850i earpiece and place into the slot with the two springy copper terminals facing up towards the top of the phone ( you dont HAVE to but i did flatten the terminals a little bit so not to bend the PCB board when you place it back in ) having the springy terminals on these earpieces placed the correct way up creates a very solid connection to the board too unlike the original earpieces which dont have any at all just flat terminals.
    7. Return the PCB board back into position and reattach the 2 connectors removed in step 4.
    8. Return the casing back into place and install all the screws ( dont forget the 2 SILVER screws FIRST, these hold the PCB board down to the casing and hold the connection solid to the earpiece )
    9. Place SIM card and battery back in and boot up your fresh earpieced Defy :D

Pictures to follow soon hopefully ;)

    Cheers

    *EDIT*

Have attached some pictures to reference, hope they help ;)

Just to report back i received the k850i earpiece today and successfully replaced it with the original one from the Defy, works perfectly and no modding at all except flattening the terminals slightly, its a very snug fit but is working fine and is much clearer than the original one in terms of call quality. Maybe the mods could sticky this or something incase anyone else has the earpiece problem. Total cost of repair £1.99 for earpiece and about 30minutes of my time !! much better than sending to motorolla for weeks on end in my opinion.

    Cheers

    A quick question...

What's the waterproofing situation like? Is there a membrane between the earpiece and the outside world or is it built into the Defy earpiece?

There IS a tiny tiny membrane between the earpiece and the casing and does appear that it would still be waterproof but i have yet to test that and not sure if i will as it is a BIG BIG risk lol ( maybe though hmmm  )

    Sorry my bad English
I have asked my headset in China for only $ 1.20:

Headphone Receiver for Sony Ericsson K850 (Black)

    focalprice.com

    is that correct?

If you mean this one :
    http://www.focalprice.com/MI224B/Headphone_Receiver_for_Sony_Ericsson_K850_Black.html

Then yes it should work ok but that particular one looks very low quality so keep that in mind.
