Which is why Android is going to beat WP7 since I can install a 32GB card without compunction...

But that benefit for Android is canceled out by a disadvantage of Android, fragmentation. Just because you can't install EVERY card into a WP7 doesn't mean it'll fail. Will Android fail because it is fragmented? Well it hasn't yet. If a phone does everything that a person (who isn't necessarily you) needs, and does it well, it'll sell. Some people could care less about expanding their memory. Some people bought 16 GB iPhones, but how could those sell, they can't be expanded!!!

I'm still a bit unsure about the correct card replacement procedure. Here's what I've done (and what didn't work):

  1. remove original 8 GB Sandisk card
  2. install 16 GB Sandisk card
  3. Windows boots, not error message, but looks like a default config. No etup wizard
  4. I go to settings, system, reset device
  5. Windows boots, same result as in 3 and I can't change anything. Under settings / system / about the phone says it has a 16 BG card, 10.40 GB usable

Using hard reset (press vol up and down while powering on, then vol down) yields the same result.

Now I saw in a German forum a post where somebody did it like this:

  1. Prepare Phone: Execute soft reset reset with old card
  2. While the phone restarts, rip out battery
  3. Insert new card
  4. Windows Phone Setup wizard starts
  5. First launch very slow, but then ok

Is that the way to go? How did you guys do it?

I recommend to you: Always hard reset the phone after inserting a new sd card and your syste will run stable :)

It seems replacing the SD card does not work for all of us. I tried 2 different Sandisk cards (16/32 GB), both marked class 4 just as the original 8 GB card that came with my phone.

Did a hard and soft reset with all of them but never got them to work, i.e. no initial setup was kicking in, can't change phone settings, etc. There's an MS KB article stating you need a special SD card, so I guess some guys where just lucky.

P.S:
In case anyone wants to sell his original (!) SD card he received with the phone, send my a message :)

As far as I know you need to do a Hard Reset. The Soft Reset just reboots your phone whereas the Hard Reset sets it back to Factory Settings os maybe you didn't do the Hard Reset correctly?
It's supposed to do the whole intro story again after a Hard Reset.

I did it like this:

  • Insert new card
  • Press both vol up and down while powering on phone
  • In the following dialogue I press vol down (says restore to default, not hard reset, but vol up is CRC check)
No setup wizard after this, it just boots into some sort of default configuration, no questions asked.

Is there another hard reset procedure?

Still the question remains: sdCard Slot available in HD7 ( expandable storage not removable storage) ? It does not matter if i have to setup the phone new after changing the card, i could sync everything. But... only 8GB internal memory and no expandable memory is definitely not enough....

dear friend, can you tell us how much memory will be enough???? 16GB, 32GB.... 120GB...

for god sake its a phone with a 25 GB on skydrive fro your photos and documents, i dont listen to music so i dont care... but i like how it reloads all the apps from the marketplcae after hard reset is so cool... the great minds on XDA created the small app wich did that for me after i loaded new rom on my WM 6.5 device...

i will like to request all those ppl who do not have a HD7 please stop *****ing about things, like OS, GUI, Storage..... if you think there are better OS, and device with bigger memory and whatever, please go buy that device...

I'm just going to pull out my old Timex Sinclair 1000 with 32k of expandable memory and call it a smart phone.

32gb kingston......

......card installed.took 7hrs to get anything on screen and extremely slow.
gave up and put in original 16gb and it wouldnt boot.it kept looping.i did the power on/hold both volume and had the option for crc check or system default.....its reloaded now, just glad mob is not toasted
after seeing the how-to vid for changing the cards,i am not suprised some mobs get damaged.i can change the sd card in less than 5 mins using a plastic tool that i got with new phone case....far safer than poking a screwdriver in the internals!
have ordered a 32gb sandisk class 2....will post how it goes.
i am looking out for ways to read the other sd card....perhaps as it is in raid....could it be possible to make an hd7 emulator and ghost copy the card to get the raid seeing correct?
have actually read micro sd in an sd adaptor on my tomtom before....and these were cards that could not be read in windows!

I just got my 32GB Sandisk Class 2 into my HD7 and its working beautifully. No noticeable difference in speed so far. I wont say more, I don't want to jinx it.

A few words of warning:

- When removing the back cover, be careful of the display ribbon. If its damaged the screen will loose colour. So try not to use sharp pointy objects. I just used the edge of my credit card (same one i bought the phone with...irony if i killed the phone with it..lol)

- Next up, make sure you restart the phone after you have set-up everything.

- Finally, be gentle with the screws, don't make them too tight or they will break as on of mine did.

So i'd like to thank all the contributers here for heir instructions and advice, I hope mine will help as well.
I want to thank the guy that posted that video instruction, it was really illustrative (if a little sparse).

Regardless of how HTC dicked us with build materials and support, I like the phone and OS. Its a cool beatiful device and 32GB really makes a difference.

I am privileged enough to have phones of different platforms; Symbian Maemo, Android and Windows Phone 7, and i thus i see the good and bad on each. They all have lots of use if you are patient but all in all they do what they can do well.

WP7 is impressive and it can only get better, the others started lean and grew over time. 2 months is too soon to judge when the others have had years of maturing and only just recently got the features we wanted.

p.s... The rumours are very true, my Nokia 5800 S60 5th Edition (Symbian) phone happily formatted the HD7 16GB Class 4 card with no problem. The old skool power of S60 strikes again. :D

Thanks for those tips, Bazanime! I'm waiting for HTC HD7 to arrive and I've ordered a Sandisk 32GB card too. You're quite right about WP7... I believe it will develop quickly in this crowded smartphone market! I'm from the iPhone world (have iPhone 4 32GB) and am quite excited to see WP7 in action on the HD7.

Does the Sandisk Class 2 work well when recording HD video stuff? I've read rumours you need a Class 4?

I hope there is a sd card but it isn't accessible from outside. So when you open the phone, you can change it (but warranty will be void?!).

Yes on the back, the backing under the door where you can access the battery, you have to remove that door and yes it does void ur warranty, but yes you can get to it. Google --> htc hd 7 sd card, and go to images.

Alright guys. I am taking the jump. I just ordered the Sandisk 32GB Class 2 Micro SD card from Amazon. Hope it works for me as well. Once I get the card, I shall request for some fool proof step-by-step process for the switch.

Just one question though... For some reason, If the card does not work, can I put the old 16GB card back and everything goes back to normal?

Read all 22 pages, lots of cluster i have to say.

Can some one type out clear step by step button for button instructions for how to boot the phone properly once the new card is put in.

Not turn on reboot, boot up check screen ur good to go..

step by step exactly so far i think i need to stand on one leg, hold the volume button and scream while gently rocking the volume button back and forth.. please advise :)

Also correct me if I am wrong, were we not able to replace our SD cards on HD2 without even a normal reboot? I used to pop mine in and out and never saw any lag on the OS.. odd that a new OS requires u to do a hard factory boot.

Thanks in advance

I am running into 2 problems myself. I just got a 32 gig SanDisk and thought I was on my way on replacing the 16 gig, however, the first problem I am running into is with the 32 gig in, the phone doesn't see the disk. if I do a soft reset, or a hard reset, it never will go into the setup mode. Just boots right now. Any ideas why? Seems like others are seeing this also.

I am also now not able to get a cell signal. Maybe I some how broke the antenna but I don't see how. I am using the method on not removing the warranty screw but am just barely opening a hole just enough to get the SD card in and out. It's still under warranty so I'm not too worried about it, but still, could there be something else? Where is the antenna located anyway?

Looks like my SanDisk 32 gig is showing it is a class 4 which is a fake. So pissed about it. I ordered it from NewEgg paying a few bucks more to ensure myself it won't be a fake. Now I just ordered a card from J&R (http://www.jr.com) paying for overnight am UPS shipping. Kind of sucks but I want the card before the weekend and the to have it by Friday it was only $7 cheaper than to have it tomorrow morning.

Found out the antenna issue was due to the back bottom cover not being on. Who knew that would mess it up from getting a signal?

What is the other method of replacing the card without removing the screws.. Can you point me towards that description.

Thanks much for your help.

Page 13 of this thread. Also to note, you don't need to remove all the screws he is removing. You only really need to remove the bottom 2 screws, maybe the 3rd one that is to the left and up from the bottom screw but it can stay on.
