Because this time your phone will be the host and not your PC. That the internal storage can't be connected as ums doesn't mean your phone can't play host for usb thumb drives. All the honeycomb tablets do that already and some of them also just use mtp, like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 I'm typing this from.

this was actually pointed out many times

yes it is supported

it was even mentioned on the launch day event on stage
is it only your supposition? or you have already checked this?
as it says the link above:
"What we will probably do eventually is add an import/export concept to removable storage. So the Camera will always save to internal-16GB, and when you pop in an SD card (or insert a thumb drive on USB host devices) you can start a migration or import/export dialog."
Am I right that there is no ability to connect usb flash drives for now on this device? Sorry, English is not my native language so I could make a mistke while translate this.
Explain to me please. usb-host for usb flash devices present or not?
Thank you in advance.

I got some answer from modaco forum. man said:
"I tried it with my OTG cable from my Xoom. Plugged in a flash drive and nothing happened... Did not show up in astro either."
It's strange that nobody who already own nexus from this forum didn't tried this function yet. only conjectures that "it must have usb-host".
meanwhile this is very important function for device that doesn't have micro SD support.=(

oh no! wonder if anyone with the phone can confirm this? honestly this shi* happened with the nexus S with the hdmi out. It was possible on the galaxy s, but not the nexus s. Now it seems the otg works on the galaxy s2 but not galaxy nexus. Sigh, love Samsung.

I think that it isn't samsung fault. GN have the same USB swith that Galaxy Note have. so the hardware is similar. I think the reason may be in new ICS (in that case I hope we will get host later) or in same that GN doesn't support usb mass storage (in that case we can forget about host).

My past 3 phones have been samsungs. I like the brand but I have this suspicion that they like to keep their better features for their own flagship phones. Not that I can blame them.

Would really appreciate it if anyone can confirm or deny if the otg works on browsing thumb drives.

It's neither.

ICS obviously supports it, as it was part of the sourcecode from hc and onwards.

And it cannot have anything to do with the way it connects to a pc, as that is nothing but a problem with the fact, that the storage for the pc and the storage for app-data is on the same partition, meaning that mounting this partition to a pc in ums would render the phone useless meanwhile.

maybe I don't understand but we are talking about connecting usb flash drive to nexus via otg adapter but not about connecting nexus to pc as a mass storage.
If I understood you properly correct me.

I have just tried this and did nothing, like it wasn't even connected. I tried it with a 8gb kingston flash drive and a 250gb samsung drive. Both nothing sorry. :(

You have to use a cable like this to test:

From all the technical requirements, the Galaxy Nexus SHOULD be able to act as a host, but the question is why flash drives won't work, while the Galaxy S2 can

Because the Galaxy S2 is running custom Samsung firmware, not stock Android.

There seems to be some confusion as to what it means to support USB-OTG. Let me try to clarify it. Just because you have USB-OTG support doesn't mean you'll be able to attach a flash drive to the Galaxy Nexus and be able to utilize it. Here are a list of different scenarios, from worst to best:

    1. The Galaxy Nexus does not have the hardware to support USB-OTG. This is the worst case scenario, and there's nothing you can do about it.

    2. The Galaxy Nexus has all the hardware needed to support USB-OTG, but stock ICS doesn't support USB host mode at all. This is bad but not too bad, it should be possible to add in support for USB host mode to ICS with a custom ICS build, by for example merging in the relevant code from Honeycomb for USB host support that ICS is lacking.

    3. Galaxy Nexus has the hardware for USB-OTG support and ICS has USB host support, but ICS doesn't auto-mount attached USB mass storage volumes. This is the most likely scenario, as this is the current state of the latest stock Honeycomb builds. In this case you should be able to attach USB peripherals like gamepads and keyboards to the Galaxy Nexus and some of these peripherals would work out of the box, but if you attach a flash drive nothing would happen. In this case you just need to make a custom ICS build that auto-mounts attached USB volumes.

    4. Galaxy Nexus has the hardware for USB-OTG support and ICS has USB host support and also auto-mounts attached USB mass storage volumes, but without root apps can't make use of attached USB volumes because ICS lacks the API and permissions to let apps do that. This is an easy fix: you just need root, and then apps like Root Explorer will then let you work with files on attached USB volumes.

    5. Galaxy Nexus has the hardware for USB-OTG support and ICS has USB host support and auto-mounts attached USB mass storage volumes, and has the necessary APIs and permissions to let non-root apps work with attached USB volumes. This is the best case scenario because it lets you work with USB volumes out of the box without rooting. But this is highly unlikely because the latest SDK makes no mention of the necessary permissions needed to let non-root apps do this.

So don't just try to attach flash drives to the Galaxy Nexus and conclude that it lacks USB-OTG support because it doesn't recognize the USB mass storage volume on the flash drive. There are many intermediate steps between USB-OTG support and actually being able to utilize USB volumes. Take it one step at a time.

Good news if your rooted and on 4.0.2 there is an app in the market called usb storage manager for the xperia arc. The good news is it works flawlessly. Mounts with my 32gb lexar micro with a cheap adapter from amazon. App is paid and costs $1.67 USD.

Ok, FAT 32 is not working either on either device so sorry it may be my cable, although it did used to work on my SGS2 I have ordered another cable so when it comes i will report but i imagine somebody would have done so already.
    2
What are you talking about? There is no such thing as a "host cable". These cables are completely passive and their only job is to change the micro-usb socket into a USB-A socket. Nothing more.

Ah. I just saw reports that certain cables didn't work.. some are labeled Usb OTG cables, so I thought there was a difference.

    Well the cable for the Moto Xoom says the cable puts the Xoom in host-mode or whatever so... yeah, dunno, but I bought the Samsung one so we'll see when I gets the cable n Nexi :}

edit: btw thats not why I bought the Samsung cable.. that would be stupid, its just something to test out, for the hell of it ;p i would have bought the $20 cable anyways

There is a difference. A peripheral cable has the ID pin floating. A host cable has the ID pin shorted to the ground pin. That's how the device that the adapter is plugged into knows whether it's acting as a host or as a peripheral.
