CM, Mahdi, PA, Slim, Carbon, AOKP, etc.. Nome of these are skinned and all of them have added features and functionality that I guarantee you wouldn't be able to live without once you give it a try. This is XDA dude.. You came here to tweak and tinker.

Hmm... I already mentioned it in my earlier post(in short) which I will give the long verison below...
- the level of tinkering you want to do varies, e.g. not everything needs a custom rom
or some may just want to root and not need another rom
- besides a GPE edition FOR ME would have meant no custom roms for a long time

Also tinkering does not only mean custom rom, it can mean rooting, using apps which are available otherwise, putting varuous mods etc, I would call al this tinkering.

Let me ask you this.. what choice do you have?
You can
1. complain on XDA that you want an AOSP ROM or a GPE available for your country
2. build your own AOSP ROM from source
3. flash one of the many AOSP-based ROMs already available

Why is it that so many of you think option 1 is the best solution?

I will steal this "argument" and use it on xda whenever i can.

I had started a thread about the poor responses and feedback I received by phone and then in writing from LG about updates to their products, they are still not the best at communicating their intentions they do have plans to release 4.4 to the G Pad 8.3 at some point, Hopefully they do follow through.
In reality.. It's already too late..
If both the G2 and G-Pad were on 4.2.2 which they were.. The G-Pad should have been *Ready and in Waiting* for Carrier(s) Approval on the G2.. I could understand T-Mobile, ATT, Verizon and Sprint not being on the same page with their brand testing and injection of Carrier Apps working with 100% compatibility & stability on 4.4.2.. Cell Phones need more time.. But this device we have is a *Universal Wi-Fi Tablet* and in theory this device's 4.4.2 should have been baked some time ago...wait ( did they not already make a 4.4.2 based 8.3" G-Pad called the GPE..)

I fear.. LG MAY NOT release 4.4.2 for the standard G-Pad.. You have a Google Play Edition with your name on it available for purchase if that's what the consumer wants.. Expansion of Vendors to CARRY & PROMOTE the G-Pad 8.3 are not even an afterthought.. LG feels BestBuy & Newegg are enough in it's biggest market.. they could care less about pushing our tablet at least here in the U.S.A... The arrival of the Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 and the pending arrival of the Nexus-8 already force the G-Pad to take a backseat.. I fear LG is holding the course they set in 2011.

Sorry dude but your argument makes no sense. The G pad GPE is from Google all lg did is supply the tablet. However this thread is about lg updating their own software to 4.4.2. The two tablets are unrelated to each other.

Added to that other GPE devices are running KitKat on their manufacturer versions so we just have to be patient. Everyone goes nuts at the manufacture when really we just have to be patient.

Do we have any knowledgeable or educated guesses about whether or not an upgrade to Kit Kat will break the write to SD card function on the LG 500 version of the G Pad? Or if LG's file manager will still work?

Or, asked another way, if and when offered the OTA update should I hold off until we find out if it breaks write to SD card?

Thanks!

Personally, I would wait to update until you find out what's up with the OTA release. The potential problems outweigh the benefits.

Eh... Sorry Dude..
If I were "Arguing" you would know it..
I'm stating my "Opinion" that's about it.. If LG was waiting for the G2 to pass verification with the carrier's so 4.4.2 could be rolled out, well.. that's already taken place.. and G2 owners have been receiving their 4.4.2 updates. If the G-Pad were going to get it, why not roll it out at the same time (give or take a week or two..) as the G2?

I just feel like putting my opinion out there concerning 4.4.2.. just like you are in telling everyone to "Stop Blaming LG! and just be patient"

The Mahdi-ROM's February revision runs EXCELLENT for me and will prop my 8.3 up until a final resting place is determined.. Enjoy the official 4.4.2 if it actually gets rolled out..

Off topic
Anyone else have problem with Mahdi-rom recents menu? It is quite buggy sometimes

In a word NO.
When properly installed, Mahdi is the only ROM that has 100% functionality.. 3/2 is the best Mahdi-ROM yet..

Maybe time for a system wipe and a fresh install..

If it helps you,
I ALWAYS do a clean FULL WIPE install.. NEVER Dirty Flash.. It's like using your bath towel again for a 2nd time...

That is the wierd thing, I didn't dirty flash it was clean. However I reflashed and did a clean install and now it seems alot better.
I also noticed that if you switch GPS settings from energy saving to high accuracy the gps will break xD

Added an ETA update. Narrowed down from the original "2014" to "Q2 2014". Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. They also did not acknowledge any potential to convert the v500 into the v510.

I LOL'd.
You're not complaining? This entire thread is full of complaints against LG and Google. If you wanted a GPE you could have just bought one. Amazon, Ebay, whatever..

XDA wasn't created as a support group for people who are depressed because they cant wait to get the latest OS updates. XDA was created for developers first and foremost.

I thought XDA was so flash-a-holics could get their fix via nighties...

Let me clear up your confusion ,
1. No I am not complaining, just merely expressing my views which I think is a big part of XDA.
* *Now I understand that for some (including you) anyone who does not necessarily agree with your views seems like they are complaining,
* but actually most of them are not (including me).
* So in short, just because I chose to add my views DOES NOT mean I am complaining.
* Different people have different views and just because they are different than yours , you cannot start assuming things as you did in
* this case.
2. I have done some cooking in my time, but dont see why is it relevant to this topic, besides I never asked you what I should do.
* *so thanks but no thanks for this piece of unsolicited advise.
3. That is not same as stock GPE and I(and many others) have already covered the reasons why ample times before.

In short,
don't make assumptions,
don't generalise,
& never try and portray that everything you think is good, is good for everyone.

Atleast its on its way, based on my ex co-worker, the GPE conversion is not very straightforward due to the new policy reasons. He was explaining further but by then I had already downed 5 beers/shots.

I hope they update the UI a bit in the next update.

So, I had started a thread here about the poor responses and feedback I received by phone and then in writing from LG about updates to their products, specifically the G Pad 8.3, but also the G2. I then decided to escalate it to the President's office which yielded the below response in relation to anticipated updates.

I figure since they are still not the best at communicating their intentions this post will at least serve to show people they do have plans to release 4.4 to the G Pad 8.3 and Kitkat at some point, which is great news especially for those who were on the fence due to the uncertainty of update support. Hopefully they do follow through.

EDIT - new update below re: timeframe. Q2.

    Hi,

I pinged our mobile HQ to inquire about your questions. KitKat is scheduled for the Gpad, but “2nd quarter 2014” is the closest I could get them to narrow down. I’ll set a reminder to follow up with them and attempt to get a more clear timetable as we enter 2nd quarter.

    Thanks

    Hi Sean,

As you pointed out, LG hasn’t been the fastest in providing updates in the past, and we’re trying hard to fix that. We appreciate you sharing your compliments regarding our product and your concern with us about post-purchase software support. I have registered your feedback for review internally by relevant teams and have escalated the matter to our headquarters. Since we’re making progress, I believe you’ll begin to see the results of these efforts.

The G Pad is expected to be updated to KitKat, but unfortunately it does not seem that it will be until 2014. Regarding the G2, it is coming but the final build will also have to be tested and vetted by our carriers so a precise timeline is hard to determine.

I know that this answer likely falls short the clear details & timelines you were looking for, but your feedback has been shared with the right teams to begin making improvements in this aspect of our post-purchase support.

Thanks again for your candid & constructive feedback,

I was able to root with the original Gpad root. However looking through the aboot with hexeditor it looks like this aboot was been patched against loki exploit. Therefore no recovery.

External SD card still has write issues.

I could make a tutorial for the way I did it but I don't think anyone wants to be updating aboot just yet. Think it would be safer for those that tinker to pull the partitions and make a flashable. It's late for now, I'm not sure I'm even reading the hex right but I think it's cross writing addresses from aboot and kernel/ramdisk so to patch loki.

Yes you have to flash the tot file. You can break it apart with the tool linked to.

Seems to work. Haven't had time to look for any bugs yet, but I'd say it's the first taste of KitKat.

Let me answer by myself, my G Pad is V500 version so it is not a GPEdition. It looks like sceen autorotate is not working after tbe upgrade, it is not a autorate malfunction at all, it looks like an accelerometer has been disabled and i am not able to calibrate it, it is not available in settings.
