Evening folks!

Are you sad because your Nexus 5 is charging slower than you like?

Did you buy a shiny new 2A+ AC Adapter and it just disappoints you?

Are you on an endless search for a “good” USB cable, having to spend lots of money for just a wire?

Do you really need all those extra USB cables, or are you just trying to get your AC Adapter to work right?

How about just hoping to see “AC” charging, but all you get is nothing but that damn “USB” ….

If you’ve been having problems, and you don’t need extra cables, then I got something for you!

Sir, or Ma’am! This right here is your solution! And just so you know, I like deals! mmmmBACON likes saving money!

Some of you may already know this, but for those who don’t, step a little closer. Your Nexus 5 will charge so fast. It’ll be quick, spiffy, and done in a jiffy!

I present to you, the 1.8A Blackberry Folding Blade Charger!

Now before you start asking me, “What’s a Blackberry????” Let me tell you a little story.

Back in the day, before the magical dinosaurs and such, Blackberry was the king.
But, much like how the dinosaurs all disappeared, Blackberry was not long for the world either.
But they did leave behind a little something, little devices to show just how good Blackberry was, remnants, relics if you will.
These were the Blackberry Folding Blade Chargers.

Words can only prove so much. So to convince the skeptics, I got a few pictures to share with you!

I started this here Nexus 5 charge at 12:00AM midnight. I started at 14% (connect charger popup), and snapped up a screenshot every 15 minutes. The phone was placed in airplane mode.

Yes, your eyes don’t deceive you! That was a 14% - 100% charge in 1 hour and 19 minutes, with a recorded top current of 1704mA (actually a bit higher but I couldn’t snap a shot in time!).

So, you might be wondering, "mmmmBACON how is this a deal?"

Well let me tell you why I think so. On the Google Play Store, Google recently started to sell a similar 1.8A charger. It goes for $14.99.

This charger, has the same 1.8A output, has fantastic build quality, and sells on ebay (from a US seller) for $4.99 for 2, or $5.99 for 3!!! If you live in the US, you also get free shipping!! Basically, you get amazing chargers, for DIRT CHEAP!!

Essentially, you can have 6 of these chargers for LESS than the price of 1 charger from the Google Play Store!! (Yes I ordered 6 despite the shipping prices to Canada)

They come in an envelope in bulk packaging like this:

rVEmIc3.jpg

They are genuine, they are built very well, and again are DIRT CHEAP!! This gets my seal of approval!! I don't know how this seller has so many, or how they can sell at that price, but you'll get no complaints from me!! WELL DONE!

Well of course if you live outside the US the deal drops a bit as shipping prices are not the best. That is why I ordered multiple sets! Initially, the shipping charges almost made me not order ($13.20US), but once I added in a second set of 3, shipping only went up $0.50! I was going to push my luck higher, but beyond 6 and import charges kicked in...

So if you live in the US, this is an absolute no brainer! If you're outside the US ordering multiple is a better idea. Or maybe get a friend to split the bill and you'll still come out on top compared to the Google Play Charger, and MUCH faster than the stock Nexus 5 setup. For 6 to Canada, it came to about $5 per charger. I then sold 2 to co-workers for $15 each (as they retail in Canadian stores for $35 - $40), and I use the rest to power my 1.5A Qi chargers. So really, I got 4 of these chargers for free after selling 2 of them!

That brings me to the second part of this deal!!

I really like QI Wireless Charging, and I don't always need to charge at a blistering fast speed. I like knowing that I can when necessary, but I mainly bought them for this reason!

Powering your 1.5A (and 2A) Qi chargers!

WlrRXUz.png

Oh yeah, maxed out Wireless Qi Charging is good stuff!

A lot of people have been searching high and low for good USB cables and a good AC Adapter to power their Qi Chargers! If you have a Qi charger that requires 1.5A Input (such as the Q8 or the Q5 "Puck"), the Blackberry Folding Blade Charger will fully power it!! This is also a cheaper option than looking for an AC Adapter and a good USB cable separately.

That is why I mentioned at the start of this post, if you really needed extra USB cables for other needs, because if you don't this is a much better option as the build quality is excellent and the price is very low.

**NOTE: I did try using the Blackberry Chargers on my 2A Input Qi Chargers and they worked perfectly fine. There were no problems at all fully powering the chargers using these 1.8A chargers. I believe that these 1.8A Blackberry Folding Blade Chargers are close enough to the 2A input specs and provide a reliable/consistent high quality current, that they serve as better power supplies for Qi chargers than most 2A AC Adapters that you can find elsewhere. Many 2A AC adapters are fakes, low quality, or just do not provide a 2A current.

Hey man one question, what widget is that to show you the input AC?

sorry for my bad english

No problem, your English is fine. The clock/weather/battery info are all 1 large widget. It's called DashClock Widget and it's free on the Google Play Store. Then you can just download whatever extensions you like to add additional information.

Thanks. This was mentioned in another thread a while ago but still useful and funny. Unfortunately postage is $22USD to my country so not really a viable option for me. Anyone know of cheaper postage sellers?

Wow, I went to their main online store and they are selling them for $7.15 each including a 10% discount! So mmmmBACON you really found us a bargain!

Speaking of the 10% discount if you enter the coupon code "youtube" during checkout at WirelessGround.com you will get 10% off your entire order.

Thanks!

I know that airplane mode is sort of similar to having it off, but I wanted to be able to snap screenshots. I also pretty much never turn my phone off. Reboot it every now and then sure, but rarely it is ever powered off. I rebooted the phone and then switched on airplane mode to limit most external power drains but still allow me to switch on the screen and grab a screenshot.

Also, are you sure you maybe haven't misjudged your charging time? It is kind of impossible to go from 15% - 100% in 30min with the stock charger/cable even with the phone off. It is a 1.2A charger and even if it theoretically had 100% efficiency for the entire charge cycle and had no slowdowns, it would have to charge a 2300mAh battery. 15% is 345mAh, so that leaves 1955mAh to fill. 1.2A in 60 minutes at 100% efficiency is 1200mAh. There is still 755mAh remaining and that is already 60 minutes charging. That would require roughly an additional 38 minutes. So if it was theoretically at 100% efficiency, it would take a minimum of 98 minutes to go from 15% - 100%.

@mmmmBACON: I've tried a combo from a friend which charges even faster. 2A OEM Samsung charger + generic OEM HTC cable. It took 80 minutes to charge from 1% to 100% with wi-fi on and occasional screen checks. Unfortunately, I ordered ordered one of those Samsung chargers for myself and found out that the bundled cables limits the current to ~1.2A. I now need to find a good cable. Do you have any good sources for cables which ship worldwide?

Did you check the cable? I ordered Samsung 2A charger as well but it was the charger that actually outputed only 1.2A. Bundled cable was great and allowed higher amperage.

Yep, I tried it. I have a very thick Blackberry cable lying around which in combination with the Samsung charger goes to ~2amps. Unfortunately it's only 10 inches long so it's pretty much useless. I don't like having outlets on tables or my phone charging on the floor.

Just ordered, ty for the informative and humorous post. Have been quite upset with the charging time of the N5 AND the battery's rapid draining!!! Worst I have ever seen. May be forced to revert to the stock ROM and under clock it, never mind freeze any and all apps running in the background. It is so bad that THE CAR CHARGER CAN NOT EVEN KEEP UP WITH THE DISCHARGING. While charging it is discharging just as fast if not FASTER if I am running the car dock app. Its incredible! As if its uncharging! Lol. Any ideas? Phone shows that the screen and keyboard are the culprits, but I doubt it is only the screen. May put this on Ebay and go back to my carrier and BL unlocked RAZR M. Oh, and BTW, do NOT drop the Nexus 5!!! I have seen some horror stories of screens cracking from minimal 2 foot drops!!!! Meanwhile I can throw my RAZR M at a brick wall and it may get a scrape on a corner! Well, if anyone has any ideas plz do tell!!! Ty

Either the car charger or the cable (if it's not integrated with it) is at fault. I'm using some cheap car charger with 1.2A output and cable that comes with N5. With this configuration I'm able to efficiently charge the phone with GPS and 3G on using online maps.

Hehe, that was part of the joke in my post! The endless search for a "good USB cable." Sorry.

The biggest problem I found with the Samsung style chargers were that a ton of them are fakes... They look exactly the same, but don't put out anywhere near the advertised 2A. I got burned a while back ordering a bunch that only turned out to have an output of 300 - 400mA. That was using my beastly ECOMOTO cable... That's why I really like these Blackberry chargers, you don't need to worry about if it's a good cable or not, or if it's a good AC Adapter or not, it's just 1 high quality charger combo with it's guaranteed output, for pretty cheap.

By the way, where did you order it from? It probably wasn't from Samsung right? You would think they would provide a cable that supports the maximum output of their own chargers.

As for the cable though, I couldn't really tell you good sources if you are outside the US. I am in Canada and it is difficult enough, and I'm just next door. If you're in the US the Monoprice Premium Cables are the cheapest that support a high current. They ship outside the US but it's not as good of a deal because of shipping. Even shipping here to Canada kind of made it not worth it.

By far the best cable I have ever used (and still use), is the Motorola ECOMOTO cable. If you can find that cable, on ebay or something, you're golden. It's thick, rugged, supports high current, and will probably survive the apocalypse.

only really good for those in the US unfortunately - as mentioned postage is like $22 to Australia - plus need a US to AU adapter

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Have you tried adding in multiples? Shipping kind of sucked to Canada as well ($13.20US) but when I added in another 3 it was only $0.50 more. So $13.20 shipping for 3 or $13.70 shipping for 6. I then sold 2 for $15 each and basically kept the other 4 for free.

I'm sure you would be able to sell off a couple of them locally and make the cost back. It might be worth it that way.

In your opinion bacon, would this charger be fine to use with any modern day smart phone ie g2, gs4, m7, etc...?

    Nexus5

Sure, it's built really well and provides a high current to charge quickly. If you're in the US, the price is the biggest draw though! They're so cheap. The 1.8A output is exactly the same as the LG G2 AC Adapter. It did provide a sustained current of roughly 1700mA, so it has >90% efficiency.

One of the good things about these chargers is that they have a nice long cable. It's 6.5feet long I believe. So even if you have it plugged in behind a desk or something, the cable will pretty much reach wherever you need it to.

A drawback of the USB AC Adapters is that even if it provides a high output current, the current provided to the phone is also heavily reliant on not just the quality of the USB cable, but the length as well. Most cables are limited to 3ft and below. There are some longer ones out there, but the majority are relatively short.

My 2Amp charger charge my phone from 0 to 100 in 1hr 40 mins

That's exactly 1% per min. And I'm not in airplane mode.

I usually don't charge in airplane mode either. But when you are doing a test (for me anyway), you want to ensure as best you can, that there is no interference or the test isn't really being genuine. I've used these chargers in normal circumstances and there is pretty much no difference in charge rate. It is still roughly 1700mA. I just want to be sure when I'm testing maximums.

By the way, if you look at the screenshots I provided:

    12:00 - 12:15 = 19%
    12:15 - 12:30 = 20%
    12:30 - 12:45 = 20%
    12:45 - 01:00 = 13%
    01:00 - 01:15 = 12%
    01:15 - 01:19 = 02%

Overall for the 86% charge, and the usual slowdown at the top end, it took 79 minutes, so >1% per minute.

If you could provide the name of your charger/cable combo, as well as mA photos like I have it would be good information for comparison. I'm not going to go and say that these speeds can't be beaten, but nobody else is really providing detailed information on their chargers/currents, availability, or prices.

I generally like to find the best deals I can, and when I do, I like to share them. If there are better deals out there, by all means share them here so everyone can benefit! I just don't believe that (for US residents) 2 for $5 or 3 for $6 for high quality, and fast chargers can be beaten. And you avoid the headache of searching for USB cables which just add more cost on top of the chargers. To Canada for 6 it came to about $5 a charger for me. That I still believe is a better deal than what you can find for most AC Adapters or Cables by themselves, let alone both together.

What app are you using to get the battery amperage?

It's called CurrentWidget. It's free on the Play Store.

Well written and funny as hell. Thanks for the heads up.

Since you seem to be the charger expert 'round these parts, do you have a recommendation for a car charger?

I have one but my phone still loses power (albeit slowly) when I am driving with bluetooth, GPS, and screen on.

I do the same thing as you in the car. GPS, music streaming, screen on Auto brightness the whole time.

I use an older 18w Anker Car Charger. This one to be exact http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-Dual-Port-Charger-iPhone-Galaxy/dp/B00IFU3NMY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1399908388&sr=8-5&keywords=anker+car+charger. This was before they updated them with the intelligent device detection. So there is an Android and an Apple port. It's not even available in Canada anymore and I had to pay I think double the price back when I bought it...

When I paired it with my Motorola Ecomoto cable, I got the same current as the stock LG 1.2A block. I was able to do everything mentioned above and still slowly get a charge. I haven't found a car charger yet that can actually charge higher than stock block speeds, but this charger was still able to slowly charge while performing all of that stuff.

I would maybe suggest buying the updated 24w Anker car charger with intelligent detection, so you don't have to worry about which port to plug in to. Both will give full current to Android devices, and both will give full current to Apple devices.

Since you're in the US it's also not that expensive on Amazon @ $11.99, compared to $23.99 here. Seriously what the hell Amazon, more than double the price... http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-Dual-Port-Charger-PowerIQ-Technology/dp/B00D82O68Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1399909109&sr=8-2&keywords=anker+car+charger

There is also one with a built in cable if you don't want to use your own (same price) http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Dual-Port-Technology-Lightning-included/dp/B00DDLYCUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399909516&sr=8-1&keywords=anker+car+charger
