Well I'm a little wary about switching to european firmware for now, since the phone is only 2 weeks old and is in good warranty! Might as well give it a shot with the samsung service guys and do a full reinstall and see how it goes!

Yes if your phone is not rooted , then rename it in windows (your pc).
Go to Organize -> folder Options -> View Tab and then uncheck "hide extensions for known file types". Now you can install it on your Android.
You can't change the extension in file manager on your phone.
Is this already been done and ended with success?

Well guys, something intresting happened today, like I mentioned earlier, I was going to go to the service centre to fix my restarting/freezing issue and also do an upgrade as I can't do that at home, so the guys at the service centre re flashed the phone but when I got it back, my sim card could not be recognized! Then he tried his own one and the same problem...

Turns out my IMEI number got reset to '0' somehow! I didn't even know that was possible! How can the IMEI number change just like that! Isn't it like a unique code or something? Well anyways, he couldn't get it fixed (giving me some excuse that the server's of samsung korea are down or something), But he said he would try and get me a replacement phone as its brand new! So that's good news, seems like I'm gonna get a BRAND NEW PHONE for my still BRAND NEW phone! Doesn't hurt though... :D

Hope the new one fixes whatever minor problems I had with this one (like the wobbly compass, and restarting/freezing issue) FOr now they gave me a Galaxy I7500 (Spica) as standby, hate using 1.5 on it though, but quite ok otherwise...

Does ooVoo use front facing camera for chat? Have you tried it? Does it have a desktop client as well?

Cheers!
Yes. No (never needed Video calling/chatting. Will try shortly. May be with you ;)). Yes ;)

[i9003] what all to backup before flashing to xxkb3?

I am having free time today hence planning to get rid of buggy/crippled ddkb1 fw & want to update to xxkb3 fw.

I am going to use odin for the 1st time so don't want to mess up the flashing process as we don't yet have recover mode of i9003.

What all should I backup as a precaution.
here is my list
sms/contacts/ via kies
apps & its setting via titanium backup
will take screen shots of various customization so I can refer back for doing the same.

few questions I have
Anything else I should backup?

I plan to factory reset prior to flashing & before updating should I unroot my phone or not?

Should I remove the sim & external sd card before flashing?

I would be flashing using win7 x64 system hope nothing goes wrong.

Better not to restore settings when you have upgraded as possible conflicts old settings and new rom .

Is always safer .

Should I remove the sim & external sd card before flashing? Again for safety i always do that .

I would be flashing using win7 x64 system hope nothing goes wrong.
Flashing a stock rom with pit and repartition checked has always got me out of trouble .

I assume you mean not to restore the settings for stock apps, i do want to restore settings for the apps downloaded from the market else i will have to spend lot of time customizing all of them 1by1.

Any problem restoring the setting for market apps?

This is the procedure I am going to follow

Welcome to the club, as of now there is no cooked rom yet for i9003, rex4u is working on some customization which you can try.

I guess you are already on XXKB3 firmware which is the best with most bugs fixed as of now.

    Hmmm.......
    Let's discuss.

RAM : SGSL has more user available RAM(468MB) than SGS(330MB) and said to have larger Memory module(640MB) than SGS(512MB).

CPU & GPU : If you would dig Internet you will find that OMAP's are optimized for Performance (Moto Droids perform far better than SGS @800Mhz) whereas HummingBird is more optimized for Video Rendering (PowerVR GX540, lagginess). Moreover it is known fact that TI OMAPs are far more suited to Over Clocking than any other. Read here. So its basically choice between doing some serious heavy work or playing some cool games and watching movies on your phone. Btw PowerVR 530 is also not ages behind.

Display : How many of you have actually compared the two displays side-by-side ? I have a Wave S8500 with S-AMOLED and I know that SC-LCD is equal to it (though Mktg. hype says else). It has better brightness and Sunlight legibility. Plz do a compare.

Yes, definitely SGSL has 4GB less in-built storage :( but to me that's not the deal-breaker.
Hope it helps my friends here !

Can you tell me how to use this file? I am using the i9003 as well. I am new to the Android phone. Where should I placed the file. Do I need to unzip it first and place somewhere. I have no success using the i9003 VPN software to connect to my office PPTP VPN server. My friend use the same account on his i9100 and no problem. Thanks in advance.
You need to load the module tun.ko by using the insmod command.
I am guessing you have already rooted your phone.
Place the tun.ko file anywhere, say /sdcard/tun.ko and run the following command from su shell (Use terminal emulator program from android market or connect your phone to computer in usb debugging mode and run from the command prompt C:\> adb shell )

    Code:
    # insmod /sdcard/tun.ko
This will inject tunneling capability to your phone. Now programs which can make use of this new feature can use it! :)

Did you try the lag fix on i9003 or i9000?
I did it on my I9003 without any hassles but be sure to use the v1+
    And NOT the v2

Heck il post a guide for the lagfix later :)
So that you don't screw up :)
