The HTC One's weakness is name recognition. It's still can't touch the galaxy brand when it comes to marketing, the chances of it even coming close to outselling the s4 are very slim. Samsung is on a whole new level now, and it will take a ton of marketing money for HTC to get on that level.

This is a fair comment, however I think Samsung customers are less loyal than Apple customers used to be...Moving to a different brand is much easier coming from Android, as you can rely on a pretty similar Software experience!

Also, HTC is not trying to target the bulk of the Samsung customer base. They are mainly interested in the style-craying crowd (the premium market segment) and they have already said that they are quite happy with Samsung appealing to the masses because it is a more mainstream brand.

So in other words, HTC is aiming primarily at the Apple crowd plus the top tier of Samsung users that have higher style aspirations. HTC's CMO has made that premium positioning very clear-

Here is my translation from a taiwan forumer that query HTC for the gap issues on those showcase units at Taiwan. Just for you who still can't stand with it

My translation:

After consulting HTC and retailers, I have learned that HTC One showcase units in Taiwan mostly manufactured in January. HTC expecting the launch will be on March, thus those units prepared on January were sent to retailers as showcasing unit because HTC want cosumers able to touch an operable unit.

Why most of those unit are present with gap near the power button side???

Because those early unit are experienced also dropped by many consumer. [hmm... official statement]

Most of those unit were also double as tester unit that experienced through multiple times of re-assemble and torned apart by HTC engineer, while the place of gap laid was where they tear the phone off apart.

Thus, this issue were unlikey to be plaguing on retail unit.

Snapdragon in the Nexus 4 can be overclocked up to 1.9Ghz.

Thats pretty epic I say. :D

I have no doubt that SnapDragon 600 can achieved but just wondering will samsung clocked it at 1.9Ghz as press stated. They may wanna choose to prove their octa exynos better by lowering CPU clock on their SnapDragon 600 GS IV varaint instead. Maybe they don't care neither..

the only assumption we have of its speed is based on Anandtech's old report of a very aggressive clock of 533mhz (quiet high for a power VR MP GPU), if so it might score 49fps based on my calcuations vs the 41fps on the S600 SGS4

now given they had to downclock those A15s due to thermals, i won't be surprised if there is the same happened for the GPU

so before a benchmark appears on the GL bench website, it's too early to make any call

in terms of tech, Adreno 3xx is a next gen GPU on all levels, ES3.0 support, unified shaders, GPGPU, Direct, Tile and Mixed based render support, it's qualcomm biggest GPU tech yet and the drivers are still a little immature

as an example Adreno 220 on the Sensation (which was the first implemenation of the 2xx series) gained 2x its speed after the ICS update and the drivers matured

considering samsung is scoring 41fps on their s600 SGS4, i don't expect them to seek a lot higher for the octa version, i predict something between 41 and 45fps (otherwise it will upset the s600 owners)

Finally and most important the GPU on the SGS4 octa, regardless of its real speed will get better support from devs simply because its the same GPU from iOS, as for Adreno it needs Qualcomm's dev support (which they've been pushing aggressively but still lacking against iOS)

One area in favor of ther Adreno 320, is that nearly all 2013 flagships are using it, including Samsung and the Nexus, so developers will be more inclined to care about it

The GPU clocks for the Exynos 5410 were not confirmed, they downclocked the hell out of the CPU, and 3 x 544 @ 533 MHz is a very high clock. All chips have a sweet spot of MHz / Voltage, when you exceed that voltage / heat / power draw increase rapidly. Intel managed 2 x 544 @ 533 MHz, but with a much smaller / power efficient dual-core.

Anyway, Qualcomm is everywhere, devs are saying nice things about the One, and not so nice things about Samsung, especially Cyanogenmod devs. I was unhappy last night, but today I'm in a great mood and wish HTC a massive sales success. Samsung has become arrogant & lazy, which is bad for Android given their market share, a strong HTC is vital for ALL Android fans, last night we saw the future of a Samsung monopoly, it wasn't pretty.

Good post, with Apple people assume (rightly or WRONGLY) that they buy into a culture / movement. I would love somebody to tell me, what cultural values Samsung represents.

Lol. I just hope battery is good enough on the one as all the zoes and watching films etc chews up battery and the camera lives up to the hype. Coming from am s2 storage and battery are big issues. I often change the battery as watch at least one film on the train and usual stuff like games etc a day and I work outside so charging it from mains is impossible for me.

THe HTC One is much brighter than any Galaxy device. This means you have untapped battery potential in the form of reduceable brightness!
  1. Reduce brightness to S3 levels (240cd/m²) and you increase battery by 60%!
  2. Reduce brightness to S2 levels (145cd/m²) and you increase battery by 245%!

That's why I laugh when I read that Galaxy OLED devices are presumably energy efficient. They suck atrociously at energy efficience. Plus their maximum brightness decreases over time (but that's another topic).

Honnestly, you should not have to worry about battery on the HTC One. The S600 is particularly energy efficient, not a power hog like the Exynos Octa 5 is, and has untapped battery potential which most reviews do not reveal to you (as they test at maximum brightness (e.g. the Verge, Techradar) or a percentage thereoff (e.g. GSMArena).

Worry not my friend, and revell in the One's awesomeness.

If they come up with another way to change battery then that would be great.

Battery: you can use an external battery to double your battery life, but I really only use them when I forgot to charge my phone and I am in a hurry. :)

It is more convenient than opening your device to change the battery.

One last thing about camera is I see s4 has a massive lens. Lets see if its better than s3 as in low light that was awful.

Judging by the first head-to-head comparisons, the One's UP Camera trounces the S4's, like it did the XZ's...13MP is just beyond the sweet spot for small sensors.

how power-efficient is the "auto brightness" in the one??

i always found auto TOO bright most of the time, which is why i really liked the way i could adjust the levels in CM ROMs.

Hamdir have a nice rest, I might do the same:) Don't worry Google see it as well, hence Motorola / Nexus!

Samsung have bigger worries than plastic, Touch Wiz has got worse, the lag is terrible, all these 'features' they've included seem to really slow down their ROMs

All these people jumping on benchmarks like Antutu, because it scores a little higher than One, forget just how terrible 99.9% of these benchmarks are, they produce different results each time, I will post about this in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, we should tell everyone we know, how good the HTC One is, then it is up to HTC to wow them, this is how Apple built their brand.

Ya know, very well put but what people don't see about the way HTC builds their phones beyond just looking and feeling premium is their durability. I have the i4g and I beat the snot out of it and its still kickin 20 months later. Only one damage mark on the top right corner from a really hard fall on concrete. Also has anyone noticed they keep the weight right around the same mark?(I may be mistaken) IMO they do this to help the feel. My wife has the gs2 and I hate how light it is. Feels cheap and easily forgotten in the pocket. Not my I4g, though. I always know when it's there.

Also IMO the One should get Google's backing in how a phone should be built and help HTC market it if they want a chance at knocking the slats out from under Sammy

Just my 2 cents.

You guys are talking like if the only thing that matters in a smartphone is video games!
HUGE LOL
Go and get a 3DS or a PSVita for God sake!
Smartphones are a whole: screen/camera/design/material/apps/games/speakers/calls quality/internet/GPS...
And the One is beating the sgs4 in ALL these apart performance in video games (but still beat the hell out of all other phones)

For power users sucha are myself and Hamdir that is one of the most important things in the smartphone aside from good camera , build / quality , other things we do not care so much :p Which is why i'm keeping my hox as my backup gaming device mainly for tegra 3 games and i'm quiet sure Hamdir will do the same :p

there are rumours circulating that its not the s600 since it wasnt confirmed by Samsung

if so it might mean Samsung cheapened even further and the bench we have on the website, is simply from one of the prototypes

still still as far as i know s4pro can not achieve 1.9ghz

Actually it can but it can't last long in that state , it'll crash and possibly brick :p

yes this is the exact why i got depressed this morning

Chill mate, you shouldn't even replay to those comments , now i'm gonna be a little bit *rude* or perhaps insult some ppl but not directly :p
Anyway it's not your fault because those ppl are affected by marketing , you mainly have provided them every single proof/info about s600 & HTC One which proves them it wont be a bad chip or slow or even behind Octa chip in fact theres a high chance it will be in front of it thx to bad therminal of OCTA and Throttling. Anyway my suggestion to you is screw what those ppl say, you made the thread for them , you've put right in front of their eyes all the info but they're either lazy to READ or too stupid to understand ! And no DON"T Quit , there are MANY of us who appreciate whatever you find about HTC One and other devices and we're very much grateful for all you do for this thread/community without even having to do any of these things.

i always found auto TOO bright most of the time, which is why i really liked the way i could adjust the levels in CM ROMs.

I do not know that, however when two devices have similarly efficient auto-brightness, the one with the highest maximal brightness is at a disadvantage. What we need is the ability to impose a cap on maximum brightness.

Can someone confirm this, but I think the newest Android versions allow you to set the maximum brightness used by the auto-brightness. That's just what we need to have a smooth experience and still maintain great battery.

By the way has anyone else noticed how it appears HTC have purposely calibrated the stock video player to be dimmer than the overall UI experience? I bet this has a lot to do with those video battery tests where testers measure at maximum brightness or a percentage thereof (e.g. GSMArena).

I read somewhere that HTC does not allow any RGB and color space controls the way Samsung does. Do you guys know if the One X had that kind of support enabled in custom ROM's and whether we can expect this for the One? I for one, would hate to have suboptimal video experience just because HTC decided they need to tick the battery box for reviewers.

Hamdir don't quit, I read your posts and have been doing the same you have been doing on every forum and youtube video to straighten the facts!!

You are not alone in this. There are other idealists out there to counteract the truths that billions of dollars try to pour on us. Samsung did not get where it is on its own. The early adopters DO have an impact on purchasing behaviours and especially nowadays with social media, everything you say has a much broader impact on a much larger audience!

I wonder how much Samsung payed all these pages to hide features of the One .. incredible..
- not 4 but 4.3mpx
- one can do hdr video too
- htc one has zoe with all these cool features like "drama shot" just with more options to customize and to create a better effect!

16GB SGS4 has a 729€ pricetag in Germany.
Really think this will help HTC :)

In Finland the One costs 644,40 € and SGS4 698,40 €. At least now HTC did something right and didn't spoil the fun by overpricing.

will be nice to see how Sense compares to vanilla android on my nexus 7.

never had an android phone before.

anyways keep up the good work :)

Im also an iphone user, been using it for 3 years now and gottem very tired of it. Have always having my eyes on htc and im really excited for trying out android. The phone looks awesome but im a little skeptical when it comes to the camera.
Dont get me wrong some pictures i've seen here are absolutely stunning, but some pictures are a bit disappointing if u ask me.
Its the only thing holding me back.

Man, I admit this is the most epic article about these two phone I had seen till now..

Hell, they managed to do the Google Play versus itself draw fight.. Additionary comparing two heavily skinned Android simply by version number.

I'm suprise they didn't judge battery life yet. I mean by size 2300mah vs 2600mah..

More... But I am now in kinda wordless mode thanks to the article..

Heres a little joke my cousin just made up when he saw s4 to cheer us up about this BIAS:

I would rather use nokia 3310 then s4, if i get pissed of at someone i could throw 3310 on that person and kill it , but if i throw s4 it would fall apart in the air before it hits the guy

LOL @ Him !
