Update 25.10. : C432.156 now available, tested on BLA-L29 C432

Update 27.08. : C432.150 now available, tested on BLA-L29 C432

Hi,
@trojjacker postet a guide about how to use FF to update even newer versions. He kindly allowed me to use his guide to create this thread so that everyone will be able to update using FirmwareFinder again.

  1. I will not be held responsible for any damage you might cause to your device. If you previously updated you phone with unlocked bootloader (like with HWOTA8), first check the xloader version of your current firmware before updating. More help: xloader checking tool thread
[*]Please read the instructions carefully, before you report any problems. There are some known issues listed below.
[*]This is using the manual DNS method of FirmwareFinder and it only works with the smaller OTA Updates (must be approved) so far.

  • Uninstall HiSuite on your computer and delete the HiSuite app on your phone (under "apps"), restart both devices
  • Install this version on you computer: HiSuite 5.0.2.300
  • Install the corresponding version of HiSuite App on your phone: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/huawei/hisuite/hisuite-5-0-2-300_ove-release/hisuite-5-0-2-300_ove-android-apk-download/
  • Download Firmware Finder, check for updates that are approved (only these will work, just like the old days).
  • Only the smaller OTAs work, (NOT the FullOTA!!!) For BLA-L29C432 this is 148 (156372) from July 25th, around 550MB (today is 17.08.2018)
  • Go to "get an update through DNS" and select "manually" - make sure you are connected to the same network as your computer, write down the DNS and tap "register update"
  • On your computer: Go to your network adapter settings (Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings -> double click adapter -> change properties) change from Auto DNS to the FirmwareFinder DNS as your primary IPv4 DNS
  • deactivate IPv6 by unticking it in adapter properties
  • Connect the phone to your computer and start HiSuite. Put the connection type of the phone to "data" and not to "charging only". Activate USB debugging mode in developer options. Be careful not to accept the update request of the HiSuite app on your computer. The app wants to upgrade itself to a newer version. This has nothing to do with the update of the phone. If you accidentally accept the update you have to start over the whole process
  • Once the connection is established click on "update" inside the HiSuite app on your computer and now the update should start downloading. Ignore the version HiSuite displays for the update - it's a wrong number.
  • Don't forget to put all the DNS settings on your network connection back to "auto" and default again

This process can be repeated for every approved OTA. Tested so far on BLA-L29C432: Upgrade from 142-145 and 145 to 148 and ALP-L09C432.

Known issues:
  • Wired Ethernet connection (LAN cable) causes HiSuite to state "no internet connection". Use a laptop with WiFi to fix this.
  • FullOTA does not work. Only use approved small OTA Updates
  • USB debugging/ HiSuite HDB is blocked by an app. First, try to disable and enable again USB debugging and then HDB permisssion. If this does not help, it mot likely means an app with "draw over other apps" permission is active and blocking it. This could be any app like Navigation bar, Facebook Messenger, the XDA navigation gestures, etc. Revoke this permission for all apps in question. (Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> Apps -> Settings -> Special Access -> draw over other apps -> Three dots -> show system processes-> look for apps that are likely to be active right now)
  • You are presented a choice between a developers version and another version. Only use the smaller OTA, not FullOTA
  • If you are using any VPN services turn it off, since FF wont be able to detect your connection after registering the update on their server.
  • Since this only works for smaller OTA updates, if you are on an older version update version by version. eg: you are on C432.142, first update to 145 and then to 148.

I hope I can spread the word of FF working again with this rather complicated workaround. Again, many thanks to @trojjacker for pointing it out.

Thanks for the guide! that imagine will also work for the ALP models (mate 10) ....... then, i understand that it is not necessary to have the bootloader open?

I do not have a Mate 10 ALP-, if you want to try it you are welcome to confirm. It should work. No unlocked bootloader needed, this is basically exactly the same as we are used to from firmwarefinder. Just a different method that allows us to download even the new firmwares.

Im guessing theres no way this can work with unapproved versions. I've got ALP-L09 C432 but version 148 is not approved yet, only version 140 which I have. No other method?

Please just read the guide. Firmware has to be approved, this is normal FirmwareFinder Update process....
There are many firmware versions that are approved. You must complete your guide with the xloader 01 or 02 issue. Otherwise somebody can apply your guide and brick his phone. Could you downgrade your firmware to 145 version now or update to a new version SP1? With an approved version? (Dont do this!!!!).
Check your installed firmware and see if it is xloader 01 or 02. If it is 02 ( and I am sure it is 02) dont use an approved firmware who s xloader is 01.

I don't know what you mean, no xloader01 firmware is approved. If yes, please send screenshot. I will adjust guide then. Approved firmware until now was only the one that reached devices via OTA soon after.

You adapted this guide not for today only. It is up to you to provide full information regarding this guide (risks, what is next, etc) . This is my opinion. Nice job, otherwise.

I asked you all please provide screenshots of any firmware with 01xloader that is approved. I cannot find any. My knowledge is that only OTA that gets pushed to devices get approved.

Why do you need screenshots? It's enough to advise people about xloader versions and recommend them to check that before flashing a firmware. This would be enough for older and newer firmwares, because you never know which xloader a firmware has, until you check that.
Also provide a link to the Xloader check tool and you are done. ?

Well the truth, I have not checked in other models .... but in the c432 FULL OTA, all the previous ones to b140 are xloader 01 and the later ones finished in sp1 are also ... I think it is better to warn, by itself in Some of the Models, (that there are many) are passed in some update ....
It may be that when updating with this method, when using incomplete files, the partitions where xloader resides, nothing is installed and that it stays the same, without giving any problem ..... but this I do not know for sure. In xloader thread you will get better.

Because there are only claims so far. I have checked all firmware in FF today and only firmware that was pushed out by huawei via OTA updates were shown as approved (like BLA-L29c432 137, 142, 145, 148). No xloader01 firmware from the past 3 months or so is approved on FirmwareFinder for c432, c636 and c185 (I checked for BLA-L29/09). So if you guys can provide evidence that I am wrong and you are right, i am happy to change my guide. otherwise it would be misleading.

With ALP-L09C432 (mate 10) There are already those who have updated with this method without problems.
As I said before, it is possible that when updating without being full ota, the partition where the xloader is is not modified and there can be no problems ... it is a speculation that is not checked

I am not sure what you mean. My method does not involve downloading firmware as a file to oyur pc and flashing it in some way with the console. It is simply FirmwareFinder update process... huawei update process... i dont understand why you think it is even possible to install xloader firmware with FF. Since this firmware is not approved, there will always be an error verifying the update file.

Well you're right .... Since they are still official updates signed by hw, but if someone has updated by HWOTA8 and modified their xloader from 01 to 02 without knowing it, and later updates by DNS to a signed HW that it is xloader 01, it will have a total Brick. So, as might be the case, it is better to warn ... I think. If it is that the xloader file is in the partition that is modified when updating by DNS ..... I do not know! Greetings.

Finally I understand what you mean lol thanks for the advice.
I did not realize that you are talking about the firmware that is currently installed. I thought you were talking about installing wrong xloader with this method. (Although this is not possible.) That is why i was asking for screenshots of approved xloader01 firmware.

As I already mentioned, you can add, that for the ALP-L09C432 it is tested and it works. Greetings and grace for the work.

It worked very good and I am finally on 148 on my phone BLA-L29C432
I had a little problems connecting to HiSuite, because I allowed the phone to use HiSuite HDB before.
Maybe you can add it as an advice, first to deactivate HDB, connect the phone to the computer and then active usb debugging
